description Motorization in large cities currently constitutes a factor that demands alternatives for urban centres to recover their functionality and offer their inhabitants public spaces that prioritize social interaction. The objective of this article is to analyse the perception of the population that for some reason goes to the historic centre of the city of Toluca, Mexico, regarding its pedestrianization. For this purpose, a semi-structured survey was designed that collects the opinions of visitors to this polygon, considering the reasons for travel, costs, modes of transportation and their position in Favor of or against pedestrianization. The results indicate that, although there is a high percentage (69%) that supports initiatives to avoid traffic congestion and implement improvement actions, it is also a reality that pedestrianization cannot be total: 53.5% of the population is in favour of partially pedestrianizing, that is, only some roads, while 31% prefer to maintain the conditions as they currently are despite the negative effects that prevail. These figures reflect that the authorities responsible for urban mobility at the local and state level must take on the challenge of designing alternatives to move towards more sustainable schemes that counteract the externalities derived from the increase in the motorization rate in the historic centre of Toluca.

La motorización en las grandes ciudades constituye en la actualidad un factor que demanda alternativas para que los centros urbanos recuperen su funcionalidad y ofrezcan a sus habitantes espacios públicos que prioricen la interacción social. El objetivo de este artículo radica en analizar la percepción de la población que por algún motivo acude al centro histórico de la ciudad de Toluca, México, en torno a su peatonalización. Para tal efecto, se diseñó una encuesta semiestructurada que recopila la opinión de los visitantes a este polígono, considerando los motivos de viaje, los costos, los modos de transporte y su postura a favor o en contra de la peatonalización. Los resultados indican que si bien existe un porcentaje alto (69%) que apoya las iniciativas para evitar la congestión vehicular y ejecutar acciones de mejora, también es una realidad que la peatonalización no puede ser total: un 53,5% de la población está a favor de peatonalizar parcialmente, es decir, solo algunas vialidades, mientras que el 31% prefiere mantener las condiciones tal y como se encuentran actualmente a pesar de los efectos negativos que prevalecen. Estas cifras reflejan que las autoridades responsables de la movilidad urbana en el ámbito local y estatal deben asumir el reto de diseñar alternativas para avanzar hacia esquemas más sustentables que contrarresten las externalidades derivadas del incremento del índice de motorización en el centro histórico de Toluca.A motorização nas grandes cidades constitui atualmente um fator que demanda alternativas para que os centros urbanos recuperem sua funcionalidade e ofereçam aos seus habitantes espaços públicos que priorizem o convívio social. Para o efeito, foi desenhado um inquérito semiestruturado que recolhe as opiniões dos visitantes deste polígono, considerando os motivos da deslocação, custos, modos de transporte e a sua posição a favor ou contra a pedonalização. Os resultados indicam que, embora exista uma elevada percentagem (69%) que apoia iniciativas para evitar congestionamentos e implementar ações de melhoria, também é uma realidade que a pedonalização não pode ser total: 53,5% da população é a favor da pedonalização parcial, isto é, apenas algumas estradas, enquanto 31% preferem manter as condições atuais, apesar dos efeitos negativos que prevalecem.
