The discovery registered in the current report constitutes a strategic tool.  It discloses not only opportunities that would benefit the school, but also threats that should be avoided, both of them constitute a relevant information to achieve its goal.La caracterización o conocimiento del entorno o ambiente externo de la Escuela de Diseño Industrial de la Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia, sería determinante para efectos de  competitividad y sostenibilidad  así como de la pertinencia de la educación impartida en la misma escuela.Este hallazgo, registrado en el presente informe, constituye  una herramienta  estratégica  en tanto revela oportunidades que  beneficiarían a la escuela, así como amenazas que debería eludir, información  relevante para el  logro de su misión.Palabras claves:   Entorno, oportunidades, amenazas, pertinencia.
