Haemosporidian protozoans of the genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon and Plasmodium are vector-borne infecting a wide range of birds worldwide, where they can have significant effects on the life expectancy of their hosts. Research conducted in recent decades has left aside ecological factors such as altitude, which is related to the acquisition, transmission and distribution of hemosporidia. In Colombia, knowledge about the parasitic diversity of haemosporidians is limited and fragmented. In the Department of Caldas, a region with a high number of bird species, the incidence of Leucocytozoon in wild birds is unknown. In this sense, the objective of this research was to establish the associations between parasites and wild birds at different altitudes in the Department of Caldas. In nine locations located at different altitudes, in four municipalities, birds were captured and blood samples were taken, identifying the hemosporidia present through morphological and molecular analysis of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b (Cytb). A total of 74 samples from birds belonging to 45 species were analyzed, with a total prevalence of hemosporidia (Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon) of 31.08% (n= 26), infecting 14 species of resident and migratory birds. A total of 18 lineages were identified, including eight new lineages for science, and it shows for the first time the presence of parasites of the genus Leucocytozoon in wild resident and migratory birds located at different altitudes in the Department of Caldas, Colombia.
