Description
Summary:In this paper we presented a novel, general purpose thinning method with emphasis on symmetry. The proposed algorithm is of iterative character. We achieved better skeleton structure by splitting the method into 3 stages, each with a different thinning strength. We introduced an image designed for testing the thinning algorithms and the results of various skeletonization methodologies. Our tests show the proposed algorithm outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods in accuracy and symmetry. We provided implementation details and showed how the performance of the method was increased. Thinning is a basic stage in image segmentation and hence feature extraction for object recognition. Both the test image and the implementation of our method will be made publicly available.
