Description
Summary:The technical efficiency of the agricultural sector has been the subject of extensive studies from various perspectives. This work begins by reviewing theories and literature on the subject, offering a historical overview of agricultural development in Colombia from colonial times to today. The data for this work are from the third national agricultural census 2014 designed by DANE with a validity of 20 years. Subsequently, a linear regression by Ordinary Least Squares is used to estimate the agricultural production functions (Cobb-Douglas) in the Colombian municipalities and a Stochastic Frontiers model to estimate the average technical efficiency of the sector, finding that this is 58%. which reflects high levels of inefficiency and missed opportunities to increase productivity. Empirical findings indicate that irrigation and land suitability are the most crucial capital factors for agricultural production, showing statistical significance of at least 5%. Therefore, it is suggested to implement policies to expand irrigation, especially in the Orinoquía region.
