Summary: | The bamboo belongs to the grass family, and it is a self-sustaining, fast-growing plant that can be found in most continents, especially in East and Southeast Asia. It has played an important role in the history of multiple cultures that have developed around it. Its use is widespread among multiple fields such as textile manufacturing, paper pulp creation, building material, feeding and medicine, and even in the manufacturing of weapons for war or defense. This paper analyzes the possibility of creating a strategy for the alternative use of bamboo in the building industry due to its highly versatile advantages as a structural material. The sustainability of bamboo is a fundamental differentiating factor over the conventional materials used presently. Considering the state of the art and a visualization of the successful projects developed with this material, it is explained how it could be implemented in sustainable construction and a solution for the shortage of affordable housing. |
