Being the second country with the highest number of displaced persons after Syria with 5.7 million displaced persons according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the department of Chocó has historically been affected by the armed conflict and natural disasters, although its population It is equivalent to only 1% of the national total, in 2018 it ranked first in massively displaced people, sixth in victims due to mobility restrictions and first in number of people affected by disasters of natural origin, with at least 20 % of the population of the department affected. These factors deteriorate the situation of the population, since 78% of the inhabitants live under the extreme poverty line according to DANE for the year 2012. |
