This review includes a look at philosophical theories as premises of developed research projects, and approaches, techniques, methods and instruments used in the research activity. Nowadays, these aspects are very important due to it is a time in which the quality of education is highly promoted. Although this work addresses a basic issues about research, focusing in the construction of a “research hexagon”, which interrelates the diversity of used terms by different authors in their publications about this process.En este artículo se hace una revisión de las diferentes teorías, conceptos y definiciones que son empleadas en el diseño y desarrollo de trabajos académicos, con el objetivo de fortalecer la cultura investigativa y promover el espíritu investigativo en los estudiantes y la comunidad académica en general, como parte de la formación integral. La revisión incluye una mirada a teorías filosóficas, como premisas de los procesos de investigación que se desarrollan, lo mismo que enfoques, técnicas, métodos e instrumentos empleados en la actividad investigativa. Aspectos que revisten especial importancia en esta época que se está promoviendo la calidad en la educación.
