Description
Summary:The trade war between the United States and China had a great impact on the Colombian steel industry, visible in the increase in imports of different types of steel materials at prices considerably lower than those produced in Colombia. In addition to the atmosphere already heated by the trade war, there are Turkish and Brazilian imports that have been rising and Chinese smuggling that arrives from Ecuador. Although the steel industry received a boost due to the increase in the construction of VIS and 4G highways, the prices of Chinese steel represented a great challenge for the industry, which had to request the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism the necessary measures to protect production and employment. However, China continues to consolidate itself as the world's largest steel producer and it will not be possible to compete with its production capacity or commercial scope. What the Colombian government has shown is that it can safeguard an industry that is growing and has a great potential within the country's productive apparatus.
