Summary: | Microbial fuel cells are an emerging technology for the production of electricity and simultaneously the reduction of organic load (COD) in wastewater, this type of technology is still in laboratory-scale studies, since it represents an opportunity in the development of alternative energies, due to the available volume of wastewater treatment in Colombia. To implement this type of technology there are different components and variables that must be studied in order to ensure the generation of electrical energy and reduction of organic load of the waste water. The present research work focuses on the design, construction and commissioning of a microbial fuel cell, through the study of the most commonly used configurations at laboratory scale, the materials of which it is composed and the influence of them in the generation of electrical energy and waste water treatment. We analyzed the dimensions of the components of a CCM, the composition of the bridge of ion exchange and its relationship with the generation of energy, the material of the electrodes and their characteristics which allow the process to be carried out in an appropriate manner and allow the continuity in the research. Finally settled the operating parameters of the process, identifying a virtual instrumentation software in order to monitor the variable temperature and relate the influence of microbial growth and hence in the generation of electrical energy. |
