Will artificial intelligence be a blessing or concern in assistive robots for play?

The recent advances and popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) offer exciting possibilities to improve technology but they also raise concerns. In this paper, we use our research to present the potential benefits of using AI in assistive technology for children with disabilities to access play,...

In this paper, we use our research to present the potential benefits of using AI in assistive technology for children with disabilities to access play, and examine potential ethical concerns surrounding data required by AI algorithms. Since play is a key factor in child well-being and cognitive development, secondary disabilities may arise as a consequence of motor impairments. Assistive robots for augmentative manipulation can be instrumental in providing children with physical disabilities play opportunities, but we need to take a principled and user-centered approach to technical innovations. © The authors (2018).application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.7322/jhgd.147242https://repository.urosario.edu.co/handle/10336/22369engCentro de Estudos de Crescimento e Desenvolvimento do Ser Humano218No. 2213Journal of Human Growth and DevelopmentVol. 28Journal of Human Growth and Development, Vol.28, No.2 (2018); pp. 213-218https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-85049564526&doi=10.7322%2fjhgd.147242&partnerID=40&md5=329f233c2bd4035a0c52df240cdd08d6Abierto (Texto Completo)http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2instname:Universidad del Rosarioreponame:Repositorio Institucional EdocURArtificial intelligenceAssistive robotsAugmentative manipulationChildren with disabilitiesMachine learningPlayWill artificial intelligence be a blessing or concern in assistive robots for play?articleArtículohttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Adams, KimEncarnação, PedroRios-Rincón, Adriana M.Cook, Al M.ORIGINAL147242-Texto-do-artigo-297668-1-10-20180626.pdfapplication/pdf411631https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/db07dabb-dbdd-42aa-9a8b-ce2b4234dd93/downloadc2f69248be7815c6a23a12a6bc970ee2MD51TEXT147242-Texto-do-artigo-297668-1-10-20180626.pdf.txt147242-Texto-do-artigo-297668-1-10-20180626.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain30415https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/d8964721-cdee-495d-abed-75c461c737b4/downloadc53166d88ed0a517657c5b80752900ceMD52THUMBNAIL147242-Texto-do-artigo-297668-1-10-20180626.pdf.jpg147242-Texto-do-artigo-297668-1-10-20180626.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg4905https://repository.urosario.edu.co/bitstreams/53e3f333-f316-4ba8-90e8-25d56c96771f/download37bd070b94131f4202de761e3df360ccMD5310336/22369oai:repository.urosario.edu.co:10336/223692022-05-02 07:37:20.38398https://repository.urosario.edu.coRepositorio institucional EdocURedocur@urosario.edu.co
