description La enfermedad periodontal constituye una enfermedad inflamatoria desencadenada por microorganismos de la microbiota bucal. Su inicio y progresión está influenciada por factores de riesgo como el consumo de cigarrillo, la diabetes, la placa dentobacteriana e indicadores de riesgo como osteoporosis, alcohol, edad, estrés, entre otros. Las enfermedades periodontales tienen un alto impacto local desencadenando sangrado gingival, bolsas periodontales, pérdidas de inserción, recesión gingival, movilidad y pérdida dental. Estas condiciones afectan la calidad de vida de los individuos al generar dolor, afectaciones estéticas, disfunción masticatoria y alteraciones sicológicas. Igualmente, en los últimos años, se ha identificado el papel de las enfermedades periodontales como factor o indicador de riesgo sobre otras condiciones sistémicas, especialmente las conocidas como enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles. Hay evidencia que muestra el inadecuado conocimiento, actitudes y prácticas por parte de pacientes, profesionales del área de la salud y odontólogos con respecto al diagnóstico, prevención y tratamiento de las enfermedades periodontales y desconocen las implicaciones sistémicas de ellas por ende el objetivo de este proyecto fue desarrollar una iniciativa para la enseñanza de la importancia del cuidado de la salud periodontal en vía de mejorar la salud sistémica, especialmente en lo relacionado con las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles e incentivar la necesidad de que ocurran cambios en la enseñanza de la integración de la salud bucal con la salud general y viceversa, en la Universidad CES
